Merck’s Extension Project Takes Another Step Forward!

Merck is one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. Its production site at Corsier-sur-Vevey (Fenil) is one of the largest and most modern biotech centres in the world. It produces medicines for multiple sclerosis and a number of different cancers, as well as various molecules designed for clinical tests. More than 550 people work there on a day-to-day basis. Over the past few years, the group has been exploring possibilities for expanding its activities (click here for more information), in order to prepare for future growth. The Fenil site, an exceptional setting for such technological innovation, would be the preferred option.

Aware of the economic impact that such an investment would have on the region, all the stakeholders involved (first and foremost Corsier-sur-Vevey’s municipal authorities, but also the canton’s Economic Development Office, the Intercommunal Technical Office and property owners) have been working together to ensure the development takes place. A project to extend the zone of activity has been the subject of various studies, resulting in the creation of a new Plan Partiel d’Affectation (a partial land-use plan – PPA “En Fenil”).

The process has just taken another step forward with the approval in early March of the Plan d’Affectation (land-use plan) by the Corsier-sur Vevey municipal council. The case is currently awaiting a decision from the canton, which would then lead to public consultation on actual construction projects. The objective is to ensure the longevity of Merck’s presence in the region, with the creation of many additional jobs!

“The site of this multinational pharmaceutical company is to expand over the next 5 years with the purchase of 40,000 m2 of additional land. The council’s legislative branch has just approved a land-use plan in En Fenil allowing the group to expand its activities. On the programme: new production facilities for biotech medicines, as well as a second wastewater treatment plant (STEP).”
